I seem to recall from my many years of owning an SPF in the '70 and '80s that a significant cause of frustration was the automatic battery-saving meter switch, which would shut the meter off (and center the needle) when the light level dropped low enough. So it seemed like you had correct exposure, when in fact you weren't even close. If your camera hasn't been used recently it might need to be serviced, especially in terms of light gaskets around the door. But the camera was very well made and had a pleasant mechanically precise feel compared to today's cameras, making it enjoyable to use.
