I'm new to the forum. My wife has now joined me in retirement and we are both interested in pursuing photography now that we have time. Like my wife, I am an optometrist so I have a background in optics. Pentax has always been the camera choice of friends going way back to my college days. My wife joined the forum a few days ago and has gotten some good recommendations on cameras for us newbies. We are primarily interested in nature photography.

budget

what you like to photograph the more specific the better:

Welcome! Since you are both getting cameras you can share lenses! Buy 2 KPs or K-1 iis, or one of each. For KP get a 55-300 PLM lens for sure, and something wider, I would suggest the DA 20-50 Ltd, or the DA 16-85. All of these are weather sealed. I don't have a K-1 so I won't recommend lenses. I do mostly nature and landscapes, I use a KP, and the lenses I use most are the DA 20-40 Ltd, DA* 300, DA 55-300 PLM, and DA 15 Ltd. The 15 is the only one not weather sealed.

We are not very dissimilar. My wife dislikes all the weather-sealed kit I choose; she would prefer lightweight with video options ...
