Hello, just starting up on Pentax Forums

Dear all:

Last week I added a new-old Sigma 17-70mm DC to my menagerie, which includes: my solid metal-glass "classic" range of Pentax 28-35-40-50-135mm; Pentax Kit 18-55AF; Pentax 75-200AF; Pentax 28-80AF; then Rokinon 8mm; Rokinon 500mm mirror f/8; Makinon 28-80; Sigma 100-300AF; Tamron 18-200AF (this last one is my daily walk-around lens). Current active cameras: K-3, 3 years old (constant companion); K-r, 11 years old (goes for a long walk a couple of time per week). I confess to also using a SONY DSC-W830 from time to time for test shots. Old faithfuls on the shelf but not used anymore: SuperProgram (2 copies), ME Super (2 copies), ME (brown leather).

After all this time and experience with so many different "kits" plus themes and variations, I'm writing to say that I'm impressed with the new-old Sigma 17-70mm DC. I will add my comments under separate cover, directly to the 3rd party review page for this lens.

But I like it so much already -- at all focal lengths, especially with macro -- that I'm making this statement right here on the "Welcome and Introductions" page, and I'll add a few images captured over the past few days with this lens on the K-3.

Cheers and best wishes to all / BlueLeezard

Thanks Mark. I'll try to have sufficient self-discipline to actually be able to contribute to and continue learning from Pentax Forums from time to time. Cheers / Best Wishes / BlueLeezard

Welcome from NZ! You are off to a good start but don't think you will stop craving new lenses just because you have one you like ;-)

Dear all:

Thanks and warm greetings to all who have welcomed from different corners of the neighbourhood!

Kiwi-jono, I wasn't aware there was a craving. Is that the strange feeling I have in my gut when I see all those super-sharp macro images on the Forum, captured with lenses like the 100mm macro, and I go to my lens shelf and say to myself, "All right, self, see here -- you don't have one of those excellent lenses -- maybe you should acquire one, right quick"? And then I start on eBay, hunting for a "good deal"? Is it like that? OMG, is there any hope?

I was out on my daily hike yesterday and noticed a few bumblebees zooming around a Honeysuckle bush with white / magenta blooms (wild honeybees, too). I was purpose-driven to return home but swung the K-3 and Sigma 17-70 to my shoulder and, without giving much thought to aim or focus, rattled off a half-dozen shots.

Later in the day, I downloaded to Ye Olde MacBook Aire and was delighted to see that good fortune had smiled one more time: yes, I like this new / old lens. But, you're absolutely right: this feeling of satisfaction doesn't mean I'll stop pining for the fjords any time soon.

Onwards / cheers and best wishes / BlueLeezard

welcome! Sigma 17-70 is very well regarded -- all the different versions of it, but I think the original one (without HSM) may be considered one of the sharpest of the bunch. And the macro is definitely a great feature, as your pictures here demonstrate.

Welcome from Kelowna, BC. You have some great images! I own a Sigma 10-20mm F/4 EX DC lens and am quite impressed with its quality. Too bad Sigma stopped making Pentax lenses...
