Hello from Upstate New York, hunting vintage lenses

Been lurking on and off this forum for years. Recently left Nikon for a Sony A7C Mirrorless. One of my big reasons for picking the A7C other than small full frame, was the ease of adapting vintage lenses. Sony’s lenses are great but I like a vintage vibe with lots of my pictures and the A7Cs excellent focus peeking makes that easy.

I so far I’ve purchased the new 28-60mm compact zoom and their Zeiss 35mm 2.8 (it’s the best compact lens they make).

I have currently been hunting for a fast 50mm. After looking at the Nikkor 1.2 and 1.4 and various Russian lenses. I came across a Super Takumar 50mm 1.4. Beautiful lens.

The gentleman that owned it was in the process of completing a Pentax set that included the 50mm, an 85mm, a 135mm and 200mm. He was older and unfortunately after talking for awhile I am even more confused about Pentax lenses.

I do know however that they will be my first stop for new to me vintage lenses. The images his lenses produced were stunning. He was shooting on an older a6400 so he had the advantage of cropping the corners but from what I’ve seen of the full images here and elsewhere still stunning.

So here I am now combing through all the posts here formulating questions for my own posts.

Thanks
Russ

One of my favourite vintage lenses is my Takumar Super Multi Coated 50mm F/1.4 . In fact, it was attached to one of my digital cameras today.

Simple flower shot, on a very dull day probably at F/2 or F/1.4

Nice shot. I’m working on getting a Super Muti Coated 50mm F/1.4 right now. Finding one in good shape is more difficult than I thought. I’ve come across quite a few of the SMC versions but have been lead to believe the earlier version is a little sharper. Might just try and a Super Takumar 50 or the SMC 1.2 if nothing turns up in a week or so.

What’s your take on the 1.4 versions?

Welcome to the Pentax Forums Be patient when looking for a lens. There are hundreds of them out there. You need to know what to look for so you do not get a nice paperweight. It takes some time looking at online photos before you get an idea of what you are seeing. A lot of the problems are pore photos. Ask for help, you may find one on the forum. Good luck

Welcome from Newark NY (Wayne County). I enjoy using the old lenses also even though I'm new to Pentax. In my area vintage lenses are hard tobfind at a reasonable price. I miss the days of walking into a pawn shop with 10 display cases full of old lenses at bargain prices.

I can honestly say it is a lovely lens to use and I don't pay any attention as to whether it is sharp wide open because I don't care about that kinda thing on my vintage lenses. So it might be or it might not be.

It has a bit of weight to it and my example has a beautifully smooth focus.

As already said, be patient and the right one will come along.

There’s a meetup group here in Syracuse, CNY Photographers, on Meetup.com. I don’t get to participate anymore because U provide 24 hour care for my grandmother. They have a trip on the Adirondack Scenic Railway planned, I’m sure there will be other fall shoots. They usually do a monthly meeting in Liverpool but I don’t see one on the calendar.

These days I spend way too much time on eBay and Facebook marketplace. In just the last few weeks I’ve picked up 2 Nikkor 105/2.5s, one Sonnar one Gauss, a Nikkor 28/3.5, a Nikkor 35-70/3.5, Yashica 55/1.7 (M42) along with a Yashica TL-E, and a CZJ Flektogon 35/2.8 in Exacta mount. Several other cameras too. Having a Fuji mirrorless fuels LBA worse than just having a DSLR…

At least I did finish my quick & dirty Ricoh breech mount adapter for the 4 Anscomark M lenses…
