Chinon Auto 50mm f1.4

I tried to post this review on that page but as a new member I have to post one here first. That is fine. I have two of these lenses, which appear identical, but to my total shock one has six blades and the other has eight blades! The review of this lens, which I believe was made by Tomioka, shows a photo with six blades. I have both versions, side by side and they only vary by about 40,000 in serial number. Mine with serial number C639xxx is six blades, and C674xxx is eight! Other than that they are identical. Needless to say, the 8 blade version should give a softer bokeh.

I have about 15 of the 50mm f1.4, Nikon, Yashica, Pentax, Canon, Tomioka, Minolta, and these. I must say, the Chinon 50mm f1.4 give the best color, beating all others so far.

Welcome, Raymond!
Beautiful colors indeed! And I share your fascination with fast 50s.

That's an interesting discovery about the 6 vs 8 iris blades. My Auto Sears MC 50mm f/1.4 #C675617 is a rebadged Chinon with 8 blades. And I see in the lens review database, the pictured Chinon 50mm f/1.4 appears to have 6 blades.

As mentioned, if you add your information there it would be appreciated.

That is a great lens too! A Tomioka-made lens as well. At one time Tomioka tried to void the Sears contract because their manufacturing costs exceeded revenue from Sears but they had to fulfill the agreement. Great lenses.

DocCom, that's really interesting to hear about Sears and Tomioka. Can you give me more details about that situation, please?

@DocComPhoto,

If you have a chance, I'd enjoy hearing anything you know about the Sears and Tomioka relationship.
