What took me so long.....

Good morning....

There are some photographers who simply want to take photographs. The equipment is a tool, but they are content with the gear they have and hold onto it for long periods of time. Others are not interested in image making, they are obsessed with the gear and constantly play to the early adopter mentality. Others fall somewhere in between. Photography is a passion, but so too are the tools used to make the image. We're all different in these respects.

I am new to this forum. I had a few Takumars a few years ago which I mounted to some mirrorless camera I had at the time. I've played with Nikon digital DSLR's but didn't find them satisfying. I am 66 and having had a camera around my neck since the age of 6, I have bought and sold a lot of cameras. In the early 80's Contax was my camera of choice and their Zeiss lenses took amazing photographs.

So that brings me to today. I recently purchase a few Takumars to use on my a7r ii and rediscovered how these lenses are head and shoulders above any vintage lens I have used over the years. With two Takumars in my possession, I again, took a look at Pentax bodies and due to budgetary limitations, I have just purchased a K3 ii. It should arrive any day now.

So, the rabbit hole being revealed, I look forward to embracing a complete Pentax platform for my image making. I"m excited to be going home to OVF photography. Mirrorless cameras are great tools but they lack soul. I am excited to be taking this new journey......thanks to everyone who shares on this forum. You have no idea how much it enriches my research into this new world of photography.

I've seen a few YouTube videos that use the term Pentaxian.....almost in a denigrating way. There is nothing wrong with passion and I feel it when I visit this site. Keep up the good work.

There's something about Pentax cameras and lenses (even under other ownership - though Ricoh now are doing a good job of staying true to the spirit) that some people find deeply satisfying - more than just a tool, but equipmwnt that give a pleasure that outweighs any shortcomings - and some. Welcome to the forums! - you'll meet a lot of those people here

Welcome to the community, and to Pentax The K-3II is a fantastic camera - very tough and reliable, and the image quality is great. You've chosen well

Hi, Good Morning and Welcome to the Forum!!!

If you're interested, you can use Contax C/Y (MM version) lenses on Pentax bodies by using Leitax remounting kits. There is a story behind this. In the late 70's, early 80's Zeiss and Pentax were cooperating (well after Ashai purchased the Pentax name from Zeiss). They co-developed a number of lenses. Anyway, the partnership dissolved for whatever reason and Zeiss went to Yashica to build the Contax. The K mount and the C/Y mount are nearly exactly the same - with the C/Y mount being ever so slightly shorter and with the mount flanges being thicker - by just enough that you are unable to use the C/Y mount on the Pentax bodies. Also, rumor has it that Zeiss licensed the SMC coatings for their T* coatings.

However, with the Leitax.com --- Zeiss Contax lens for Pentax cameras you have a native K mount on the Contax glass and they shoot perfectly.

I have the Contax 28/f2.8 and the 85/f2.8 along with a number of Taks, K's, M's, A's and FA's with a few of the more recent lenses.

Welcome to the Pentax Forum. Others may say "Pentaxian" in a denigrating way, but we Pentaxians hear and wear it with honor and pride.
