Pentax-Curious

Hi! I'm a Micro Four Thirds shooter, interested in maybe trying out Pentax one of these days for the fabled DSLR experience, and the array of really stunning looking optics. I have a GR iii, and it is enough to get me very interested. (And also very frustrated as its IBIS seems to vibrate uncontrolably sometimes after an unfortunate fall when I thought I was putting it in a jacket pocket...)

There are some fantastic lenses and great cameras in the land of Pentax. What is your interest leaning towards?

Welcome!
This forum has some great threads that really show the quality of the various pentax cameras and lenses available (and the considerable photography talents of many of the forum members!). Have a good look around the forum (especially perhaps some of the specialised threads on specific lenses) and see if you can find what you are looking for.

Thanks for visiting us!

I run k-s2 and eM1, and use my old manual primes on both systems (A28, A50, M85, M135, A200) along with Oly 14-150ii, Pentax F17-28 fisheye & HD55-300 zooms. Fun times, and both bodies stabilized and wx resistant.

One of my favorite features on Pentax is the ability to crop on playback to all four 'modern' ratios - including 4:3!

Hello!
I also bought the GR lll last October and the fantastic quality of the images also led me to have a look at Pentax. I managed to buy a new KP last December which led me to also getting the K1 and selling my Canon gear.
I really have not looked back.

I note that the OP is from the US

I have had good luck in purchasing " experienced " equipment from members via the forums' marketplace

it can be sorted by country

The Pentax Marketplace | Buy & Sell Pentax Cameras and Lenses (United States) - PentaxForums.com

_______________

and there is the rental option to try out equipment as well

Information on Businesses that offer cameras and lenses for rent - Page 3 - PentaxForums.com
_____________________________________________________

the OP will find friendly members and a lot of knowledge at these forums

Hello! I'm also a longtime M4/3 shooter who's dipped into Pentax in the past couple years (AND used a GR III since they came out), so I can attempt to answer any specifics you may be wondering about with the Pentax philosophy and implementation as it relates to what you have a background with.

Thanks for all of the kind responses!

To tell the truth, I've never really shot with a DSLR or an optical viewfinder, so I'm interested in trying that experience out.

In general, my bias is towards something that's smaller and lighter, which would probably be something like a secondhand KP or an older APS-C for a cheaper entry point. This, I know, I'd be more likely to use more often, especially if it had some stabilization and weather sealing.
(Weather sealed limited lenses please?)

The other attraction, of course, would be something more different/novel that would be fun to play around with like a full-frame, or heck, medium format.
(But I really doubt I would be methodical and tripod-y enough to make happy use of a 645D even if it was a bargain.)

Would be fun to play with some older glass on the same mount with no adapting or cropping needed.

So I think it's a question of doing some more research and thought before dipping a toe in.
