Hello from the Pacific Northwest

Hello

I have very recently purchased a Pentax k100d (it hasn't arrived yet). My only dedicated digital camera is Nikon Coolpix S51 but, on top of lacking interchangeable lenses and having some confusing flash settings (I don't know where the manual is or if I have it), I'm not even sure if or how I can adjust aperture or shutter speed so I don't have much direct control. I hope my first dslr will serve me well on my photography journey.

My k100d just arrived. We also found my mom's old k1000 that we didn't know we had.

I can't seem to get manual aperture control working. I tried holding down the av button but the slider still controls the shutter speed. Is there some other setting or button or slider I'm missing?
