Another old photography newcomer

Greetings:
New member Feb 2023 but 45 years inching forward as an amateur landscape photographer. I am a life-long Tennessean and grew up with cameras in the home though did not use one until gifted a Kodak Brownie ?Hawkeye at age 13. My first serious camera was a Nikon EL2 purchased in 1978 with a 50mm f1.4 ai, replaced in 1982 with the Nikon F3 which I used until the early 2000's shooting mainly Kodachromes and some Ektachromes. My current 35mm system consists of F2A and F2AS cameras updated by Sover Wong and 15-300mm ais MF lenses with Fuji Velvia and Provia. An interest in medium format began 5 or 6 years ago with an opportunity to purchase a Mamiya RB67 from an elderly relative. In doing research on this camera and other 6x7 offerings I settled on the Pentax 67 instead and have been extremely pleased with the choice. Lenses now include: 45, 55-100, 100 macro, 105, 90-180, 200 and 300 smc P67's. I have a 500 but will be selling it soon. I have adapted these lenses to my Nikons with a fotodiox tilt shift adapter and to a recently obtained Pentax 645D with the Pentax adapter. Being so pleased with Pentax now I wonder why I originally settled on Nikon for 35mm photography. Probably because it was more prominently featured at local camera shops and 47th Street Photo in NY where I had purchased some audio equipment in the 1970's. I was not aware of Adorama or B&H until much later (my acquaintance with Ken Rockwell). I am now digitizing old slides and prints and will have a website for some postings. Thanks for allowing me to participate.

Welcome from Canada! I am also a new member here and I too shoot medium though not with Pentax. Your 67 system seems to be pretty complete. How do you feel the 67 as a handheld camera? Currently I can only do 6x7 with a roll-film back on my 4x5.

AsahiRaccoon:

Welcome to you also. As I am in the elderly camp, handholding the P67 is a challenge, although I manage fairly well with the 45mm and shutter speed at least 1/125. Since most of my images are landscapes I usually have an L-bracket attached to the camera which adds weight but facilitates use on a tripod. An after market right hand grip does aid in handholding by better balancing the left hand underneath. Do you also do 6 x 9 or panoramas with your setup? Cheers.

The 67 is a heavy camera for most except the strongest. I only do handheld medium format with my 645 Bronica and 6x6 folder. As for my 4x5, I only have a 6x7 roll film back. A 6x12 back would a dream addition as I like panorama too but they are quite pricey. However, I can still do make-shift panorama without a roll film back if I make a mask on my sheet holder and thus "wasting" a whole sheet of film for one 6x12 shot.

Thanks

Many thanks to all who sent welcoming messages. This site is truly invaluable for researching any info on Pentax products. I will be very interested to see if Ricoh follows through on introducing any new film cameras.

Greetings,
Octogenarian from California, just acquired a couple of Pentax Q's, a 7 and a 10. Looking forward to what these tiny, easy to carry cameras can do!
