Howdy from DFW, Texas

I wasn't intending to get into DSLRs for a long while but a deal on a K100D popped up on WOOT that I couldn't resist. Based on recommendations from others in that thread: Sellout.Woot: The Community:Pentax K100D 6.1MP Digital SLR Body I picked up the camera for $245 shipped and also ordered a Pentax 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens off of ebay for $49 shipped (new). My 2G SD card didn't arrive by Christmas so I snagged one at WalMart on Christmas Eve and I've been taking pictures since.

Boy howdy, this is so much better than my Olympus 8MP point and shoot! Also, the feel of the shutter and mirror actuation brings back pleasant memories of my high school years using my dad's (and now my) Olympus OM-10 though I haven't shot film since the 1980's. I've got a long way to go, using only P&S seriously atrophied my knowledge in SLRs over the years.

My biggest challenge now is deciding whether to get another lens (I do miss the 10X optical zoom of my P&S) or a flash. If I get a flash it will be the Sigma EF-530 DG Super which seems to run as low as $217 shipped on Amazon, or if I get a lens it will be one of these three:

Tamron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD MACRO 1:2, runs around $125 shipped

Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO, runs around $129 shipped

SMC Pentax-FA J 75-300mm F4.5-5.8 AL, runs around $116 shipped

I can't afford both a lens and flash, so sometime in the next two weeks I will decide which to get for this year.

Questions, questions. Oh yeah, I'm loaded with those alright. Actually, I was wondering if there's a list of abbreviations somewhere that explain camera terms as used here? I figured out what bokeh was, and AF, but don't know what IQ is as related to DSLRs.

The Search-function is a good way to locate interesting things ...

IQ is 'Image Quality' of the lens. Hope you have a lot of Quality time and some fun too
