Oldie But Newbie

I'm sorta old, but having fun with my almost 4-year-old *istDS. You can find some of my stuff on my 'blog' at WILDSPIRIT and wildspirit's Fotothing

Being almost 70 and enjoying life to the extent that my body allows, I am waiting for the newest Pentax (scheduled for unveiling May 20 or 21, depending upon which country/time zone you're in) K-7. My significant other is also waiting. We enjoy getting out (Picasa Web Albums - Wildspirit) and around in southern California. Our Cinqo de Mayo trip to Oxnard was highlighted by the terrible wildfire in Santa Barbara; I tried to get good photographic vantage points but was thwarted by hedges, walls, and the smoke and fire itself. It took us 45 minutes just to get out of town, as people were evacuating. Hot (100 degree) temperatures and the wind-driven fire rained hot ash and embers on us when I decided that was enough. It didn't do my lens any good.l

I retired from the U.S. Navy in 1985; never had a thought of getting a DSLR until moving to southern California in 2005 from the former Naval Home at Gulfport, Mississippi before Hurricane Katrina struck. I love the photographic opportunities out here!

Since then I've enjoyed the *istDS due to it's lightweight and instant response with the included Quantary lenses (18-55 and 70-300mm AF Macro). My legs aren't what they once were, so hiking to vantage points farther than 200 yards away is out. But for 'that shot' I'll suffer. So far I've been pretty lucky (serendipity works for me).

Hope to be able to grab the new Pentax w/HD Video! If the rumors are true about it's capabilities, I'm sure to get it.

Jim Pankey, USN (Ret.)

Welcome aboard, Jim. Lots of good people and good commaraderie (when we're not fighting about sensor size LOL)

Thank you, Venturi

Yeah, I remember when arguments about size and quality were about something else...LOL.

Welcome to another "oldie". I'm a 1940 model, myself, and remember those other "size" discussions.

Water in common, but salt in my case. Dad fished for a living after WWII off the West Coast of Canada.
