Hello from Australia!

Hi everyone,

I am taking up photography more seriously as a hobby now and I am planning to buy a DSLR soon! I'm looking at the K-7 but it would probably make more sense to get a K20d with a nice lens. Hopefully I won't be absolute **** at it and will get to know some of you better!

Welcome! If you can afford the K-7 get it, but it's near-useless without a decent lens on the front of it.

Welcome to the forum!

Hope you get a good deal on the K7 - but as Lithos says, good glass is an essential, so maybe the K20D might be a better option - you can always upgrade a body later.

Cheers

Welcome saien.
Yet another Aussie.
Have at least one good go-to lens that you can afford to keep...

As usual, when a new Aussie signs up there's an immediate drawling, twangy response. G'day, mate and welcome.

Welcome, I have the K10d and K20d and I can say you will not be disappointed with the K20d.
Glass is very important, if I were you have a look for a good lens and have that placed on either K20d or K7 and see which setup feels better in your hand, as balance and comfort in taking photos is just as important. I didn't go with the K7 as it didn't feel comfortable in the had and it didn't look good on some of my big lenses. I would also look at the additional grib for either body as it gives better balance.

Hey there!

Hi Saien, I just joined from Australia too.

I just picked up the K7 but it is a little more technical than the *st DS I used to use. Not too many auto functions but if you read the manual and know a little about the art of photography you should be OK.

Thanks everyone, it's great to see so many of us here! One reason I actually prefer the K-7 is that it's smaller and lighter, I have small girl-hands But, you all make a great point about the glass!

I'm waiting for the local camera shop to get another K-7 in at the moment, and I think if I see any good deals for the K20d before it comes then I'll get one, otherwise I'm going to get my little hands on a K-7

If anybody could advise me on pricing please send me a PM, it would be much appreciated.

Welcome from another Skip.
Good glass does not neccessarily mean expensive, the beauty of the Pentax system is that you can get affordable lenses going back to the mid 70s and earlier if you grab a M42 adapter. You just lose auto focus function on the older lenses which is not that bad a thing. Check out the lens review section and the lens section for some lovely cheapies that you can use either on a K20d or the K7.

Hi everyone. Picked up a K-7 this afternoon, complete with the kit 18-55 WR lens. Just surfing the 'net waiting for the battery to charge and stumbled across this site, thought I'd drop in. I'm new at the DSLR game, stepping up from a Canon G9. Last SLR was a Canon EOS 5000.

From the Pentax manual (!) it's looking like a steep learning curve so I can see lots of 'net research in my future. And of course wandering the streets of Sydney taking photos!

Good luck with your choice but I don't think you could really go wrong with either the K-7 or K20D.

Welcome from another aussie.

Welcome to the forum, all the other Aussies here today already seem to have K7's, the must be more Pentax owners down under than any where else.
