Greetings from a New Pentaxian in Victoria

Hi there!

Greetings!

Just unboxed my new K-7 today and took it for a test-drive in the garden. After playing around for a couple of hours, I think I'm too enthralled with it to sleep tonight.

This is my first Pentax camera. I've been using an Olympus E-620 for the last five months. The E-620 a great camera -- especially for its price -- but I'm totally pleased with my decision to upgrade and to make the switch to Pentax. I'll miss the E-620's articulated screen and its light weight. Not that the K-7 is an anvil. In fact, it's lightness was one of the reasons why I chose it over competing products from Canon and Nikon.

Like my E-620, I was drawn to the K-7's in-body stabilization and the long legacy of compatible lenses. The only drawback is that I now have to sell all of my Olympus lenses and accessories (and the E-620 itself) so that I can afford to start investing in the Pentax ones! I bought the Pentax 18-55mm WR with the camera but likely will buy the 50-300mm and the 10-17mm fisheye in the near future, along with a 50mm and a 90mm or 100mm down the road. I'm thinking of purchasing an 18-270mm for travelling and eventually, I'll replace the 18-55 with a sharper lens.

I love the physical feel of the K-7 in my hand. The groove cut into the hand-grip for my middle finger is an ergonomic delight. I can't believe that many other manufacturers haven't thought about doing this as well. However, one thing I still have to get used to with the K-7 is the fact that I have to press the AF button in Live View mode and then the shutter button in order to get the focus to lock. The E-620's focus lock in Live View mode works like it does when using the viewfinder -- I just have to press the shutter button down half-way. Anyway, it's just a minor adjustment in the big scheme of things.

I'm not ready to share any photos yet but will post some when I've have had more practice. Cheers!
