Glad to be here

On the recommendation of a friend in Australia, I am considering my first DSLR purchase. He is a champion of Pentax (specifically KX and K7 models) and based on that, I decided to investigate before spending.

I shoot mainly scenics - landscapes, "texture" (bark, rocks, old weatther wood surfaces, etc), and occasionally animals in the wild (elk, deer, birds, etc., in the mountains west of Denver). I also love still life and closeup photography, such as model railroads.

At this time, more than "I love model nn" responses, I'd really like to acquire or assemble a feature by feature comparison between the various Pentax models and their competition (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, etc). There are so many features and benefits to consider that this is a bit overwhelming right now.

I'm looking forward to "meeting" other forum members and hearing their views.

Tim

Hi Tim,
Welcome to this forum,
I hope you will enjoy it.

I decided to go for Pentax because of a enthusiastic colleague.
He told me the lenses were much less expensive then lenses of competitors, but the quality the same or even better.
He has a lot of manual primes, which I can always try )

After reading I had three options:
K-x (not weather resistant, light)
K20d (weather resistant, heavy and big for my small hands)
K-7 (weather resistant, a bit lighter, but expensive)

I am a biologist and I work a lot outside, so that's why I did not pick the K-x!
The K20d did not feel nice in my hand (not only the weight, but also the design of the grip). The K-7 felt much better!

Here you can compare the Pentax camera's:

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum Tim.
I'm sure you'll find Pentax cameras and lenses rating well among the competitors.
A good cross-sectional study of latest cameras may be available in a Camera handbook-type magazine available locally, like a 'Which camera to buy' guide. Here, as Jan has introduced to you, we have a Pentax-specific camera and lens review database, but the only 'new' cameras that would be of interest are the K-7, K-x and K20D.
All the best in that.
