Hello from South Africa

Hi to all.

I am from Hillcrest South Africa. We new to photography and have a little point and shoot optio s30. Could really do with some advice on how to use it effectively. I do want to move up to a DSLR in time, hopefully in September but not sure what to get though.

What major city is Hillcrest nearest to? Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg?

I'd think you might want to move up to a K100D or K100D Super after the Optio.

The major city would be Durban. I'll have look at both.

I knew I was forgetting one!

I have a K100D, and love it. The only difference is that the Super has DR (Dust Reduction; shakes the sensor, not supposed to really work (at least on K10D, which also has it)) and SDM compatibility (faster focusing with SDM-equipped lenses).
