New into the DLSR world Lens questions.

Greetings, i just picked up a K-x on Amazon for a smoking deal (even came in the cool white body i wanted.) I own a few 35mm Cameras even have a old petri from the 60's and number of point and shoots. When i saw the deal they had on this camera i knew it was time i took the plunge. It came with a 18/55 lens but i am looking for a 70/300. i am notoriously cheap lol. any good lenses i should look at? i would like to spend less the $100, knowing this is not realistic under $200 would be fine. i would also like the lens to be a auto and not a manual. thanks for having me on here and i Hope to learn a lot from you guys

Welcome to the forums.
the 2 best choices for under $200 are the 1) Tamron 70-300mm and the 2) Sigma 70-300mm. Both good value and very nice lenses. You can see user reviews of both on this forums data base.
The other choice for a bit more is the DA-L 55-300mm Pentax. Sharper overall and a great match to the lens you now have.
All three are fully auto

Kinda wondering why you didn't pop for the K-x + 18-55 + 55-300 kit? The kit that includes the DA 55-300 makes it a bargain, very much worth the bother for the extra dough.

As Peter mentioned, it's an absolutely outstanding lens for a DA. Before I bought the DA* 200, I used to use the DA 55-300 over anything else. Although the DA* 50-135 was sharper (and faster), it didn't have even half the same reach.

The Sigma 70-300 APO version is the better Sigma, but goes for just over $200. It is very nearly as good as the Pentax 50-200, but neither is as good IQ as the Pentax 55-300. (My Sigma broke an aperture blade, and the 50-200 is never used since getting the 55-300).

My 8 year old daughter is confused...

After reading your post, she wants to know if my DSLR has a cherry! Maybe you can help her understand what a DSLR Cherry is, and how does one Pop it!

Her name is Sherry... when you post your response I will have her read it. Thanks for the help.

Get a used DAL 55-300... there is one on the forum here for 250.

I picked up a quantaray (rebadged tamron) 70-300 1:2 macro for under $150. Shot some engagement pictures with it and they turned out nice. You do get what you pay for but at that price, this lens is great.

i got this dslr for $400 shipped so i got it cheaper then with one of those kits. i could not pass on the deal. from what i read the da sounds like it is well worth the extra money.

i think i better just spend the extra money and get the da.

Wow $400???? must have been a one off deal. It's $547 today.

I'm going to change the thread title if you don't mind.

I'm now seriously considering the K-x since the "kit" is under $500 (including at BuyDig.COM, who I trust) as a complement to my K20D. I'll use the K20D + DA* lenses as my weather-sealed default, and the K-x + DA lenses as my higher speed shooter. I'll try to find someone who wants the DA L 18-50 for $50 shipped or so (as I already have the DA* 16-50 f/2.8 and DA 16-45 f/4).

But I also saw the "full kit" with the DA L 55-300 f/4-5.8 added for $714 at Adorama. Would you be interested in a brand new DA L 55-300 for $250 shipped? I'd offer to do that since I'm very likely going to be buying the K-x anyway, and already have the DA 55-300 (let alone the DA* 200 f/2.8).

Just let me know. Otherwise, I'm going to pull the trigger on the base kit, possibly in Navy or, gasp, even Red (so it's easy to identify without looking down when both my K20D and the K-x are around my neck). The added DA L 55-300 kit version only comes in Black.

Yeah, the US kits are only offered in colors for the 1 lens kit (18-55). The 2 lens kit (18-55 + 50-200 or 55-300) are always black. I hope everyone goes for the 18-55+55-300, because it's a heck of a deal (and the 55-300 is better than the 50-200).

I decided to pull the trigger on the Red K-x + DA L 18-55 lens kit at BuyDig while it was under $500.

If you're still interested in the DA 55-300, Amazon has the full release version (non-L) for $349 right now, which is well under typical street pricing:
Amazon.com: Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Lens for Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo

Otherwise, the DA 50-200 can be had from many, many people.
