Hello from Wilmington, DE

Hi everyone. Just signed up for this forum yesterday and thought I'd check in. I am anticpating getting my first dSLR soon, upgrading from a Finepix S700. My choice is the K-x but I haven't been able to put my hands on one locally. Is there anyone in the Delaware area that knows of a place where I can see this camera? I'm 99% sure its the one for me after reading all the reviews and messages on the net but I would like to hold one before I order .
Thanks, and I hope to be contributing some pictures soon.

Pete

Welcome to the forums. Unfortunately Pentax has decided some time ago to sell online. So your best bet is to order through B&H, Adorama or Amazon as these places offer complete returns on their products. You can try it out and if you don't like it for some reason, you can send it back (I bet you won't!!)

Welcome to PentaxForums! I think you'll like the K-x plenty if you get it, there are a few places that still have it in photo stores, like Calumet (are they based in New Jersey?) so if you look at a few you might actually find one, although Peter Zack is correct that the newest thing you might find there is a K10D.

Thanks for the welcome all. Just wanted to say that the K-x is on it's way, should get here in the next couple of days. Could only get the one lens at this time, so I'll be looking for advice on what to get next. Can't wait to get my camera!

That's exciting! I would recommend the 50-200mm if you want to get a cheap alternative to the kit lens and get some zoom out of it.

Congrats! Is it coming with the kit 18-55mm lens? Are you looking for one in addition to that? If so, what are your shooting priorities?

In general, no matter whatever the answer, I recommend you shoot with the kit for a while and see what you like / miss.

Yes it is coming with the kit lens, the 18-55mm. The plan right now is to shoot with the kit lens to get comfortable with the camera. I shoot mostly people and places but I do enjoy going to airshows so I will be looking for a reasonably priced zoom to take shots of the flying and the static displays.

Pete: There are several threads going on right now about good zooms, and the consensus is always to get the DA55-300mm. It's not as cheap as the 200mm zoom but significantly better IQ and of course 50% more "reach".

So, check out the kit lens, get comfortable with the camera, and save up for the tele zoom.

I agree with rparmar about the DA55-300mm. I had picked up the TAMRON 75-300mm (cheaper alternative to Pentax zoom) for my K200D and was happy with it, but not completely satisfied. The DA55-300mm is much better lens. Better glass, with quality coating has little to no purple fringing at max zoom.

Edit: I almost forgot!: Welcome to the forums.

WooHoo, it's here! UPS dropped off my package this evening and I can't wait to get out and try my new K-x. Who needs to go to work?
