Is it just me, or is "Like" a rather weak word. Maybe "Applaud" would be better.

why not "this comment made me fart a rainbow!!!!!!" if one needs people to gush over the tiniest thing one contributes. somewhere in time this whole need for gushing and adulation has replaced just enjoying the hobby. this applies to all sites and is in no way specific to pentax forums it is an internet phenomenon but also related to soccer mom's invasion of real competition teaching the value of coming in butt-arsed last and getting bupkis for that result.

I think it's neat to see a way to give fellow users a pat on the back for a solid contribution without disrupting the flow of a thread with posts about what a wonderful post someone just made. that should be enough fer crimeny sakes. or do people need a wall of honor for the participation awards they won for just showing up to events as a child.

Great idea.

Might this also be applied to lens and equipment reviews as well?

Thanks Fred,

Clearly some people have put a lot of time and effort into their reviews.

Why not add a "dislike" button, so you can register a quick disapproval with a comment without having to add to an argument or feed a possible troll with a full rebuttal.

Just an idea.

thanks,

I have seen forums with real nastiness and inappropriate comments.
Rarely have I seen any on this forum. I think there is more an element
of maturity in this forum than in others I have visited. Don't think the
dislike button would be helpful. The fruitcakes tend to weed themselves out by being ignored.

A situation often arises when a posting contains misleading if not flat-out wrong technical information.

I'm hard put to think of a nice way to flag such misinformation but would appreciate some means to do so. Users ultimately suffer from such unflagged errors.

"Dislike" is not the appropriate flag for technically dubious misinformation - "technically dubious" or "controversial" or "incorrect" or ???

then you should correct the information by sending a reply in that post (in a nice way), I think. Freddy

I think you are right, and I try to do that. However it becomes a tedious job when the same errors appear over and over again.... on the other hand, over and over makes better and better sometimes.

I suppose a good solution would be a way to easily reference a coherent, wiki-like database of useful, accurate information.

There is a great need for an easy way to assemble, edit, and refer to items in such a reference pool built from postings here (and elsewhere).

Thanks for your input, Freddy.... while I appreciate your point that other forums are less mature and more abusive, I still detect and lament a growing trend here at PF towards repetitive and negative posts *just* short of flag-worthy abuse. Because it's "not as bad" here doesn't mean that we should not have a way to at least show disapproval of a semi-troll or someone who comes to PF to "kick the dog" after a bad day at work.

Just recently, I was personally attacked (called a Pentax "apologist") by a couple of members because I chose to disagree on their position on SDM motor failures. You know the type: lots of bold font and multiple exclamation points in their posts. I realized that we had a couple of guys who thrived on the passion of it all and enjoyed all the negative responses their posts created. I chose to leave the thread as continuing to spar with these two only added fuel to the fire. I would have personally liked to have been able to "dislike" their posts and viewpoints WITHOUT feeding their ego trips and giving them more reason to post more bile.

I agree totally .... ignore them, and they'll go away. But troll-like behavior, by it's nature, means people are tempted to respond to these sort of posts. A "dislike button" offers a quiet way to disagree without engaging these sort of members.

I could be wrong but I think the top posts should still be listed in chronological sequence. Skipping around may be confusing.

Dave, I think I know what you're saying. I've tried to locate specific references within the forum , for example, to a certain lens I'm doing research on and it's not like going to Google and asking "compare Takumar 50mm to Pentax 50mm" or some such request. Hits come easily on Google but it
would be super useful to have that kind of data seeking ability on our forum.
