Album Uploads "Soft"

I am participating in Single in January.

When I take perfectly sharp photos and downsize them to 1024 x n (72 dpi) they appear soft.

Please refer to my last post here:

Battell Chapel, Yale University. Detail, Chapel altar. Built in 1874-76 as a Civil War memorial, with funds donated by Joseph Battell (April 17, 1806 - July 8, 1874) and others of his family. The chapel was designed by Russell Sturgis, Jr. It is the

Then look at the same picture linked here:

I think you will agree that the larger resolution files are NOT soft. So what can I do to improve this situation? I have tried uploading larger files, and generally the system will not accept them. When I used to upload large files and the system downsized them, it did a good job of dowsizing. Now I understand that i must manually downsize because you lowered the limit, but when I do despite the sownsized versions being relatively sharp, the system displayes them like this... soft. Is there something I can do?

Respectfully,

Seaain

Given the two images, I'd have to call the higher resolution one softer, and the reduced size one sharper. Which is usually the case. What you look at is the center of the picture given the framing. It looks like what is in focus are the steps.

To determine if the original is soft, you'd need the original resolution image, or a 100% crop.

But from looking, it looks like focus is soft, and scaling it down masks it. The smaller, the sharper looking. Which is normal behavior.

I see it Seaain.
The linked image from the third party host is crisp, clear and contrasty.
The uploaded image on PF is noticeably flatter and softer.
I have had the same experience with just about all my larger resolution images uploaded to PF albums, such as here: Surfer - Pentax User Photo Gallery

Only solution is to avoid PF having to resize the image for you and upload to just under the maximum resolution before it automatically performs the JPEG compression to the image.

Right- always stay within the dimension limits, or use the user photo gallery, which doesn't resize at all (for the uploaded originals).

Thanks Ash. You suggestion of going UNDER the 1024 x resolution is a good one. I will try that. I appreciate your taking the time to look at this.

raz-0, I'm lost. I shot this at f/11 with a DA15. I focused at the top of the center window in the apse. I look at the original and generally it is pretty sharp. I am surprised you find the second set linked to be soft. I am struggling to understand this. I do realize that downsizing generally yields "sharper" looking images, but at 200% on the original they are significantly sharper than the low res version...

Adam - FWIW, I was resizing to exactly 1024. Adam, the idea of using the user gallery is good. I thought this was a user gallery. Is there a way to incorporate use of a user galler with the Single in January challenge... not putting the pieces together, sorry.

Ash, casual testing using 1000 instead of 1024 does indeed seem to make a difference.

Thanks!

SIJ uses the album system- just use 1000x1000 photos and you'll be kosher.

No worries woof. I'd gone through that process a few times before.
And I still do, since PEG requires larger images that exceed this threshold.

Well it persists for me even though I am uploading at 1000 or 1010. Not sure what else I can do.

If our system does ANY resizing on the file, it'll be compressed to jpeg 75. Make sure you're under the 1mb filesize restrication as well.

Resize to LESS than 1000px. It should be fine then.
