Linking to forum members with @name

I'd like the ability like I have with other social systems to link/tag another forum member with @username. The link should probably go to their profile page. Autocomplete, like we have in a PM would be a bonus.

It would also be cool if it notified them of the tagging.

As always, thanks Adam!

While not as trendy, what we currently offer is a quick-quote feature. Simply highlight any text in a thread and you'll be able to quote it, with a link to the post automatically inserted.

But I'm not necessarily quoting the user. Here's one example from the 300mm thread:

Here is a picture of @smc using his A* 1200/8 on the Wimberly head:
In this example, if it were to notify smc that I had tagged him in a post, he would be likely to stop by that post again. Also people of interest might visit smc's profile to see what else he is up to, or send him a PM about his Wimberley.

I believe it improves the social experience all around.

I sort of like that; particularly the part about notifying the tagged member.
It would be great when clarification, additional input, etc were wanted in a thread.

Technically it wasn't a twitter feature to begin with either. Users just started doing it. After while twitter adopted it as a feature. Then two years later, facebook adopted it as a feature.

Nevertheless, what I want is the quick ability to link to a user, and notify them that I've linked to them. Trendy or no, I think that functionality is super useful.

What I can do is add a bbcode for it- if there's not already one out there!
