Since, ultimately, there is nothing new under the sun, how strict are the rules here? I'm not going to, for example, submit my entire P-TTL flash guide, but what about a new article derived from it? Or, what about an expansion of something I've written elsewhere, with more step-by-step instructions and the addition of relevant, helpful images?

Whatever you are submitting should be written specifically for the giveaway. I would say that as long as you don't copy and paste entire sentences from elsewhere, you should be fine: basically, don't do anything that a plagiarism checked would pick up on, for example.

Well then just be sure you don't recycle content. Sure it's a fine line, but just be sure that you're actually coming up with something new for this. If I google the first sentence your article and get a word-for-word hit, it'll be disqualified, for example.
