Why would I want to do this?
What are the advantages?
Facebook might be irrelevant to you, but the real issue is that if you're not on Facebook YOU become irrelevant to the world.
I don't like FB, but it's a behemoth force and it's turned itself into a complete internet
platform rather than just some social network or website. Facebook's goal is to get you to go to facebook.com and never have to leave. The moment-to-moment doings and thoughts of your friends and obscure acquaintances aren't really enough content on their own for FB to accomplish this goal, so over the years they have strongly pushed for complete integration of the wider internet within their own doors. Case in point: you used to be able to share links to cool things, but nowadays any URL you drop into facebook will generate preview images, text snippets, entire videos, etc., that can all be viewed and interacted with without ever leaving facebook behind. Which is exactly what they want: the full content of the internet without anyone stepping outside the range of their in-house data mining and advertising spheres of influence.
And it's working wonderfully for them. Basically nowadays if you want to have a strong internet presence you have to present yourself on the FB platform. You can do this by adding "Like" buttons to your site, so that you get exposure through any "Like"-ers' contact lists; but this is kind of a passive approach. Integration with a FB app is better, even though I too will not use it.
