New Marketplace Policy Regarding Payments

To all our Marketplace sellers: please be advised that updates (shown in bold) have recently been made to our Marketplace listing regulations in order to keep our Marketplace safe and to comply with PayPal policies.

QuoteQuote:
An asking price or price range must be posted (you may ask for a best offer in addition to your stated price, however) You may not solicit payment to be made via PayPal as a gift. We strongly discourage buyers from accepting offers that request gift payments.
Sellers typically ask for gift (also known as personal) payments in order to avoid being charged a transaction fee by PayPal. By sending gift payments, buyers surrender their right to PayPal Buyer Protection for that particular transaction and consequently limit the number of things that can be done in the event of a dispute.

All future Marketplace listings must be in compliance with this new rule to avoid risking deletion by the site staff.

Excellent! I always regarded items labeled as such as seller-imposed scams, good to see it banned! Thanks!

Would also like you to ban asking for the 3% paypal fee above the purchase price. This is a violation of PayPal's terms.

Whenever possible I've used PayPal's "send an invoice" feature because it eliminates the Gift option. I also like it because it keeps the paperwork nice and tidy. Sometimes, though, it adds an extra step of telling the buyer they need to wait for the invoice to arrive in their email, and many times those buyers are chomping at the bit to get the payment done. I've had several potential buyers PM me with "I want your lens! Give me your PayPal address so I can send the money!" before waiting to find out if they are even the first person to approach me about the sale.

Anyway, thank you, Adam, for enacting this rule. (Now I have the Jimmy Fallon Thank-You-Notes piano tune stuck in my head.)

Yeah, I send invoices. The best way to go because it is clear what it being sold, and you can list in writing return terms, etc. If you aren't worried about the buyer scamming you, it also allows the buyer to pay with a credit card without even having a PayPal account. However, I insist that they do (generally, unless I decide to trust them for whatever reason) because I like to get the full seller protection you get by shipping to a verified address.

I understand the concern. But what if the buyer and seller were both well-known, to each other and the forum at large? Perhaps they have had transactions with each other in the past without problem. Why shouldn't the seller offer a price reduction to the buyer, if the buyer is willing to assume the risk that the only problems would be because of shipping, which would be covered by insurance? I don't have a horse in this race, I've never had a gift transaction, but I don't think they're necessarily the sign of a scammer.
