I somehow got the impression that this was an "Outlaw" forum in those days, for those banned from dpreview. Is that correct?

I wouldn't say so, though a lot of people migrated here from DPR.

It was the banning at DPR that helped spread the news about Pentax Forums. I heard about the forum via one of the DPR "Banned" threads and lurked for about a month after it started.

Yes, thats how I first heard of Pentax forums as well (no, I didnt get banned from DPreview). I find it interesting that Pentax forums has a "convict/transported (banned)" history much like Australia. And much like Australia, it has become a better place than DPReview.
