In a new post, inserted images from external sites with a "http://" protocol automatically have the "http://" replaced with "https://" when the message is posted.

Consequently, the images can't be retreived and never show in the message.

Change the https:// to http:// in your address bar to fix this. When browsing the site securely, images that do not support https will not be loaded.

It worked. I have no idea how I came to be browsing the site using the https protocol.

Perhaps the Insert Image icon autotext should be context sensitive, i.e. insert "http://" for normal browsing and "https://" for secure browsing when a user attempts to link an image?

All links are automatically rewritten after the fact in HTTPS mode. Otherwise, images might not work in either mode!
