These unnecessary emails can be avoided if the notification are delayed by a few minutes, the way Facebook does. So if I read the thread by that time, no notification will be sent.
I would recommend that you switch to the daily notification option for busy threads for now.
Once we migrate to a new forum software package this feature will probably be included.
