I have not subscribed to any threads, yet I get notices when a post is made in some I have read! I know you can "unsubscribe"; but the question is, why am I "subscribed" when I don't want to be?

You need to change the Default Thread Subscription Mode in your User CP.

I went to my User CP, and do not see any Default thread subscription. Where would this be?

Click "Edit Options" in the left column. You will then, among the options, see this:

Ahhh got it! I had it at the wrong setting.
