I see when I click a username in a post I have an option for friend or ignore.
I know what the 'ignore' does but what does the 'friend' do?

When you click "friend" it sends a friend request that the recipient can accept or reject.
I don't know all of the ins and outs, but one forum feature is that you can limit PMs and/or Visitor messages to friends and Moderator.
You can also restrict contact info, "about me", and albums to friends.

It's not a particularly complex system, but people on your friends list are shown in your profile and in the user cp (here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/profile.php?do=buddylist). You can limit certain content to friends only here, as Parallax said.

I miss a lot of things here by lack of observation. This one is sort of troubling......I don't think I have any friends? I've been here a long time, and it appears even my friends....aren't friends???

I work on the basis of assuming forum members are friends (in the online sense of the word!) until proven otherwise
