Hood listed for Pentax-M 20/4 is incorrect

The lens specification section lists "PH-S49 (28/35mm)" as the hood for the M 20/4. That hood might work well for that lens on APS-C, but is not appropriate for FF and would not have been the recommended hood at the time the lens was made. FWIW, I was not able to find anything on a hood for this lens unless, perhaps using a 49-58mm step up ring with the PH-S58 (18/20/24mm).

@Ole , any comment/info on the compatible hood?

@Adam, we have no information on a hood for the M 20mm. None of the five known rectangular hoods will fit. I have fixed the error in the database.

I checked in my Pentax brochures and the hood for the M20/4 is listed as follows:

Rectangular hood 49mm type (b) SMC Pentax-M 20mm f/4

The hood for the 28mm to 35mm lenses is listed as Rectangular hood 49mm type (c)

So the hood is dedicated to the M20/4 and would be marked similarly to the older 58mm K Series hood for the K20/4, pictured below.

SMC PENTAX 1:4 20mm on the front and ASAHI OPT. CO. JAPAN 49mm on the back.

@Ole we should add the above info to the DB, plus the above photo to the backend system for later inclusion.

Thanks for posting this in detail!

Hi Phil,

The hoods in your image are for the K version with 58mm filter size, not the M version with 49mm filter size.

Could you provide a scan of the brochure page that talks about the hood for the M 20mm F4 so that we have the documentation trail in place?

Thanks,
Ole

Hi Ole:

Correct I included the picture of the K20/4 hood to show the shape, as the M20/4 would be similar looking but with a 49mm filter thread.

Here is the page from the M Series lens guide:

Thanks! Now I'm envious that I don't have that brochure!

I think I found an image of the correct hood on the M-20mm ƒ4:

I have an M-20mm ƒ4. When I first got it about 10 years ago I looked for a hood for it. This local b&m shop actually had the original Pentax M20 Hood listed on their website. I ended up getting this circular metal hood by Mandee. I haven't really tested it on FF for any vignetting but I don't think there should be a problem as the outer circumference is about 100mm twice that of the lens and it is shallow. It is a nice hood that worked well on APS-C.

I still regret not checking to see if that b&m shop actually had the original Pentax hood. The shop was in existence since 1966.

Here is my M20 with the Mandee hood:

Good work! Just as I thought it's just a smaller version of the 58mm hood for the K18/3.5, K20/4 and the K24/3.5.

Probably very hard to find one for sale, some of the "M" Series hoods are harder to find than the "K" Series.

Example it took me six years to find the dedicated OEM hood for the M24-50 zoom, which is a set-screw type metal lens hood with a 58mm filter thread.

If anybody finds one of these please let us know since I imagine many of us would be interested, Even if you take the only one you find it might give others a lead on one.
