It seems that in social groups there is no "view first unread" option. Is there a reason for this? If not, could we get that capability added to social groups?

That functionality is not currently available, and probably won't be until we switch to a newer platform. However, group subscriptions do support usercp notifications, so you can get a clickable link in the notification dropdown list whenever there is an update (or an e-mail if that's what you prefer). Simply subscribe to an individual discussion, or to the entire group.

The difficult is no in knowing that there is an update in the group, but being able to find the first unread post.

What is the difference between group subscriptions and regular posts? Is it mostly (besides the behavior I asked about) that you automatically get subscribed to all threads in a group?

From the group homepage you can go to the first unread post within each discussion- just click on the down arrow icon () in front of the thread title. Notifications should also take you to this post.

Does the arrow take you to the first unread post, or is it to the current day's posts? It seems like the latter, in checking several discussion threads that I haven't read in groups that I belong to.

It should be the first unread post- but as with any thread on the forum, there is a time limit during which that is tracked.
