Nature morte == Still life
Thanks, "still" word is still very confusing to me, mort means "dead" in french and in medicine, but mort = still word is used for inanimate subjects in visual arts. But some ballerinas, sport guys, baby subject pictures even car races called as still photography.

When used the description still, subject should be either dead (flowers in vase) or at least have not the ability to move. Now I don't get it how they call a ballet or car race as still photography, still a mystery to me.

I've now added HDR and Nude to my list of categories, just so that we know what's work-safe and what isn't. I think that many of the others you listed, FL Gulfer, are way too specific to be of any help when browsing, sorting, or searching for photos. If others disagree, I will gladly narrow everything down, however.

I think that calling a sport guy or a ballerina "nature morte" is incorrect (believe me, I'm french and I know what "nature morte" means). I think "still photography" is used in opposition to a movie (or sthg like this).

I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't use this thread to debate things like that. If you really want to clarify what category means what, please start a thread in GT.

I see you change the OP, but I still didn't see nude yet, anyway I was gonna say machinery goes to either still life or industrial me thinks. Industrial is an important category in photography..

Maybe Birds & Flowers might warrant their own categories?

No they're just nature, if you set such categories, it will be zillions of them. IMHO. For instance bugs, water, trees etc.

Instead of "Sports", what about "Sports/Action"?

Dan.
I agree!

What about Documentary...

Adam: Why not adding the same categories that are available at PPG?

If you have any specifics in mind, post them here.

The categorization I'd like to use is by subject matte, not by how it's photographed. So, categories like 'photojournalism' would be redundant.

Where would one put a night cityscape? Is a night category really warranted?

Great idea, but WAY too many categories, IMO.

It can be simplified to a great extent:

Portraiture
B&W
Macro
Landscape
Documentary
Animals/Nature

Just about any subject you find can go under one of these general headings.

In that list where would a close-up of a building detail go? Maybe we need an "other" category as well!

It's just a list to pick through to see if you want to add any of them.

Sure looks like everyone is all over the place with the suggestions! An abstract & misc section would be needed with that breakup.

I don't think more categories is a problem. When there are many thousands of photos to sift through and you are mainly interested in Sports would you rather spend a long time looking through stuff in "Documentary" that isn't related to sports or go to a more specific category?
