The Pentax 645D is here!

Following the official announcement of the Pentax 645D, we've now added a page listing technical specifications of the body, which in the future will also be used for reviews of the camera: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-medium-format-slr-reviews/93370-pentax-645d.html

To discuss the new Pentax 645D, please visit the Pentax News and Rumors - PentaxForums.com forum, or check out the official announcement: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/official-pentax-news/93115-pentax-announc...40mp-645d.html

We hope you enjoy discussing this impressive new camera!

Update:

I'm happy to announce that PentaxForums.com will soon be receiving an evaluation copy of the 645D for review. Expect an article about the 645D in the coming works! Thanks go to B&H for the offer.

"...dust-proof, weather-resistant construction with 70 special seals, outstanding cold-resistant performance to assure solid operation at a temperature as low as –10°C, and a newly designed shutter unit with a top shutter speed of 1/4000 second that can withstand as many as 50,000 shutter releases..."And at fantastic. Half the price of the 40MP medium format Mamiya and only slightly higher than Nikon D3X. I've been waiting for a 24MP D700X for scenics but will now seriously consider the Pentax. I used to use an RB67, medium format is magical. I can't wait to see some images from the Pentax. It could potentially put a dent in high end Nikon and Canon sales.

No sure if this is the right thread to discuss this, hope so...

Surprised to read the viewfinder coverage varies with the lens used. Is that the way it operates with the film version of the camera as well? (I'll be using one for the 1st time tomorrow actually)

I'm pretty sure it's like that with all SLR cameras. That's why on reviews at e.g. DPReview it says stuff like "Magnification: 0.76x (-1 diopter with 50 mm lens at infinity)" in the info field about the viewfinder. I might be wrong though.

then I mis-understood what that number meant. I thought how much of the frame the viewfinder displays would change with different lenses.

Here's a link to a "first impressions" review from Bernard Languillier who attended the Japanese photo industry event where the 645D was on display:

Pentax 645D – Fiest Impressions & Interview

Also includes a brief interview with Yasuyuki Maekawa, the Pentax Product Planning executive regarding the new camera.

Shutter is only good for 50,000 actuations . . . .

Interestingly, the battery is the same as the one used for K-7 . . . . . Gee, a great reason to upgrade from K-7 . . . . . Oh, the remote control also works for 645D too. Awesome compatibility there.

Why the heck do you need a JPEG mode????

It has been said that a prospective buyer ought to seriously update his (and I guess her too) computer set up . . . . .

Yes some very cool post processing capability, including one that simulates velvia 50 like texture. Probably only on JPEG mode, like K-7.

Hm . . . .

.... like the just released HP 8740w w/WUXGA RGB LED DreamColor display which is an IPS display and that uses a 30-bit DAC to display close to 1 billion colors. ... where's the "pant pant pant" emoticon? I almost bought one customized to my needs but the 18% off coupon they advertise isn't working, so I'm going to wait to talk to their CS group. I'd be much much smarter getting a Lenovo W510 or even W701 (tho that's about the same price tricked out, so the HP is a bargain in that light), but I just can't seem to get the 8740w out of my mind.

from the Fredmiranda forum; Replacing a shutter may be a $500 repair only. So, nothing to care about.

Besides, users of this camera will not be spraying and praying

Hm.... more like $1,100 is what I heard. I hear people claiming that the shutter is probably good for close to 100,000. They haven't tested them, or at least nobody have said the they have tested over 50,000 actuations.

You are right about spraying and praying.

That is too cool and congrats. I look forward to the reviews and images although I will never own one. If the camera proves itself perhaps someday we could find it offered for rent.
