The only time I have any record of the PMs I sent is if they are a reply to a previous one. I'm not sure if the messages are received by the person or if it went thru at all.

If you go to your options page, you'll see a checkbox that enables archiving of sent PMs by default- please check that. Alternatively, you can select this option on an individual per-PM basis, below the PM editor.
