Blue Iguanas are a critically endangered species, endemic to the island of Grand Cayman. The species was essentially extinct in the wild a decade ago, but the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme in Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park on Grand Cayman has successfully reared generations of captive-bred individuals and released hundreds -- including this mature male -- back to free-roaming life. Their striking blue, unique among iguanas, intensifies during the breeding season (April-May) when this male was photographed.
