What does it take to capture the beauty of the night sky?

ISO 6400, 30 secs and I think f5.6 or f4. I used a sigma 10-20 at 10mm to maximize DoF. I used a flashlight to illuminate the logs by flashing it for half a second in the opposite direction bouncing off the ground. I had to push the shadows in post that's why you see a lot of noise (but who cares LOL).

Cold and dry weather must have been important conditions in being able to make the photo, is't it?

Yeah I would think so. It was a very clear winter night in Australia. The cold would have helped minimize sensor noise especially that I have already done about 2 hours of star trails prior to this shot.
