Off loading memory card with Windows 7

I am a computer dimwit at best. Bought a new desk top computer running Windows 7. Love the computer. At the moment wish I had XP back.

In XP, I don't let the computer auto import. I insert memory card>my computer>open files>select all> copy to external hard drive>select exact folder.

Can't figure out how to do this in Windows 7. I can send files to external hard drive but can't figure out how to specify an exact folder. Tried move but the files weren't put in folder and it deleted them from my memo card (not a nice thing to do). Can some one tell me the exact steps to copys from memory card to the desired folder on the external hard drive? Remember I am a novice with computers.
thanks

Have you ever used windows explorer? I have turned off all the autoplay features off in Windows 7 and just use explorer.

Beware of "libraries" in Win7. It's a "virtual" folder that can show the contents of more than one folder at a time. You can specify which folders the library will show, somehow.
If you put a file in the library it goes to a default folder, which you can specify, somehow.

If you've lost files do a search. Surely you can still browse to the folder using windows explorer?

I have never liked Windows Explorer. I use (free) FreeCommander, which is a dual-window file manager. Very handy for drag and drop. Also does print-screen function, among other things.

I've had terrible bad luck with freecomander. I went trough several clean OS installs before I realised it was responsible for ruining explorer.
And it's not like the real thing, I prefer total commander.
