PhotoShop Elements bad for noise

I shoot RAW. I use Photoshop Elements version 5. I also have PhotoShop version 7. When I open photos in Elements, it opens in Camera Raw dialog box. After making any adjustments, or no adjustments, and okaying that box, my photos, 9 times out of 10, will look really noisy.

Using my photo viewer, FastStone, I save those photos as .tiff, and then open in Photoshop 7, there is no noise in the photos.

Why does Elements create noise.

It's a matter of playing with settings. Tweak the ACR noise redution sliders until you are happy.

Faststone is likely apply more noise reduction.

Thanks alfisti, I've taken your advice and tweaked the settings. The one shot I used, it worked beautifully. I never noticed this program had those adjustments until today. Thanks for pointing them out.

No worries.

Just be a little careful, personally I get braver with the colour/chroma noise reduction and tend to leave the luminance alone. Also be sure you hit the RAW file before you downsize to jpg rather than use NR once you've exported to JPG.

Glad you like Faststone, some people rag on it or are uneasy about using a separate viewerwhen they have picassa or some other filthy thing ... but to me Faststone does a great job as a viewer.

I agree about Faststone which I use to preview before editing in PSE (actually I also use it for some tweaks as well.)

Since I only shoot RAW, it doesn't get jpeg'd until the final moment I get ready to upload to the net.

A friend and fellow Moderator told me about FastStone and I like it a lot better than the old program I used to use, irfanview. I only tried picassa once and promptly uninstalled it.

Dave, I have used some of FastStone's controls too at times. In fact, I like the way it saves as jpeg, than photoshop, photoshop elements, or irfanview.
