Two software editors handle raw totally differently - why?

Shot some raw+jpeg in the K20D. Had it set to B&W. In Pentax 4 all images are B&W. In PSE 8 the jpeg is B&W and the raw is in color. Why do the two programs handle the files so differently? Is it possible to get the Pentax B&W raw file to show color in that program?

Wanted to shoot raw+jpeg to be able to compare my converted from color to the camera jpeg.

thanks

Raw files are in color. The even if the camera is set to shoot b&w, that only applies to the jpeg. The Raw is always in color. Some programs can read the metadata and make the raw file appear in b&w in the same way that they can read the white balance setting and use the appropriate white balance. It really depends on how the software is written and if it reads certain things in the metadata.

Yes, in DCU4, in Laboratory or Custom, click on the Custom Image tab, and change the topmost drop-down selection box from "Camera Setting" to say "Natural".
