Lightroom and Photoshop artistic filters

I ran into a strange issue. When I open a raw file from Lightroom to Photoshop using either "Edit in Photoshop" or "Edit as smart Object in Photoshop", it seems I cannot apply any of the artistic filters, the option is simply disabled.

Anyone knows what's going on? Something to do with the integration of the two applications, I am sure, but how can I overcome this limitation?

The only workaround I can think of is not to open the file from Lightroom, but directly from Photoshop, but then I loose what I have done in LR already. So is there be a smarter way, retaining the pre-editing I have done in LR?

Thanks!

P.S. I use LR 3.2 and PS CS4

Can't you just send it to photoshop as a TIF file?

Thanks, but I don't think so, I have them as DNG raw's. Converting to TIFF would just be an unnecessary extra steo, I think.

This is maybe not a big deal, I just thought there was some smart way I am not aware of.

You may have to convert to 8 bits/channel to get all the filters to work in older versions of Photoshop.

I have CS4, do you mean that CS5 should be different in this respect? If so, that would be great!

Different yes, but still not perfect. Each version seems to have more functionality at 16 bits. In CS5 about half of the filters work.

Stupid question but an obvious one:

The files are all RGB, right? If anything's converted to CMYK, many filters won't work.

Never heard about ALL of them not working, though.

Ira, actually good question, if it happened to be so, but I do have all as RGB.

But I thinki got it now, thanks to Slinco. It seems that opening an LR file (a raw file actually) to PS tries to retain the 16 bit raw information, and many filters only work as 8 bit/channel.

So as soon as I convert the image in PS to 8bit/ch, I am able to use what ever filters and editing PS may have. But I better have adjusted the basic image qualities (levels etc.) before converting, for example to get details out of shadows/highlight. After that I can well do what further pp I want.

Quite logical actually, only the integration might be better when I update to CS5

EDIT: And yes, PS shows raw as 16bit, but Pentax files actually uses only 12 bits in available 16 bit space, if I am right.
