That's not accurate.
Lightroom's inherent color space is ProPhoto RGB. This is the widest-gamut color space. It is wider than monitors can reproduce. It is wider than AdobeRGB.
Plus it is irrelevant to the OP's situation.
The OP started with a RAW file. The camera image setting colorspace (which is different from a device profile) doesn't matter with RAW files.
Colorspace in Lightroom is only assigned when exporting files. If the OP's image lacked an embedded profile, then Lightroom would by default assign sRGB. As it was, the OP exported a jpeg with a sRGB colorspace. Nothing wrong or weird about that.
The issue is with Irfanview's limitations or the reality that his system's degree of color management is pretty loose at best.
AdobeRGB is useful if your monitor has a wide enough gamut to reproduce it--that means an IPS or S-PVA monitor. AdobeRGB is also useful if your printer is accurate enough to reproduce it at 16-bit rendition.
