ufraw profile/icc/settings for k-x PEF ?

Hi,

Could someone please share settings for processing PEF files from Pentax k-x properly ?

The default values seem to cause "underexposed" images.

Any tutorial/quick how to would also be great.

I tried searching on the internet, but couldn't find any satisfactory links which explain the whole thing for a newbie.

Thanks !

Sounds like you are asking about in-camera settings, not post-processing software settings. Best to put this question in beginners forum for more responses. But in general, the K-x, like most cameras, tries to use an exposure that avoids having any "blown" highlights, which are not recoverable. Out of the camera, it may look dark, but in post-processing, you add fill light or brightness or exposure to bring up the shadows without increasing the blown out areas. In less contrasty scenes without any strong highlights, the camera may still shoot a photo that appears to be dark, but in this case, it is usually because the camera is trying to shoot an "average gray" for the exposure. This means that if there are light colored objects dominating your shot, the camera will tone them down to what looks like a medium gray, thus making your shot underexposed. On the other hand, try taking a shot of something that should be black on a dark background. You will notice that the camera will overexpose this shot, trying to make it a medium gray. To get it right in-camera, you will need to learn what kinds of scenes need positive exposure compensation and what kind of shots need negative exposure compensation. This comes with experience. Hang in there and keep shooting and experimenting with your exposure comp settings. Also get a post-processing program to fix your "underexposed" shots. A free one like Picasa would be a good place to start for a beginner.

I am currently booted into Windows, but I think what you are looking for is to adjust the base curve and saving the resulting curve when you are happy with the outcome. Then I think you can set it as the default curve to use, in options.

To get exactly the colour and tonality of the K-x JPEG files, you would need a customized input ICC profile. Color management: , then Input profile:.
