Photo Storage Solutions Anyone?

I'm running out of HD space on my laptop and need a storage and software solution. I currently use Picasa to catalog my library of photos b/c I like how easy it is to use. But I don't think I can use it with an external hard drive. If I don't have the ext. HD power on and connected, Picasa will show lots of errors. Anyone have any software recommendations for using with an external HD?

In order for a computer to recognize any external hard drive, it has to able to access it, and the only this can happen is with the hard drive plugged in and powered up. The same thing applies to an internal hard drive - if you disconnect the power feed inside the computer, the computer has no idea it's there because it can't read it. So long as your external hard drive is connected and powered up, Picasa should work fine.

Maybe I'm missing your question???

I use Imatch from photools.com. It can handle offline library media just fine- caches a thumbnail that it will show, with an indication that the media is disconnected. Tagging and search still work as far as I know.
