Lightroom question

I've use Lightroom on my Laptop. I keep all my files on an external drive, but sometimes I don't have my external drive with me, so I just use LR as is, and put the RAW files in a temp folder. I'm just wondering if there is a way to move the changes I made to the RAW files in my temporary setup (catalog), to the main catalog when I import them into my external drive, or do I just have to re-do all the settings like I'm currently doing.

Hopefully somebody has a more elegant solution than I'm using. I export the temp files.
File Menu > Export as Catalog to my external drive, then also in the File Menu >Import From Catalog. I have all my setting in the xmp file so those go with and no image adjustments are lost.
