If a hard drive fails under warranty, will the manufacturer help you recover the data?

+1 for LaCie. Been running them for years and no issues.

Also, please oh please backup your photos to more than one location, one preferably offsite. Houses burn down and data centers fail, so once your data is gone, it's gone. That's why I keep four backups of my most important data (like photos). One on an external drive, two in different online datacenters and one just as my JPGs on SmugMug.

I work in IT and have had horrible experiences with both WD and Seagate. Right now, I have one 500GB Seagate and one 1.5 TB WD external drive sitting on my desk. The Seagate has been plugging along for years and I just recently got the WD.

The internal drive in my Dell was a Seagate and it died in less than a year. Seagate replaced it promptly. If not for a full image external backup, I'd have spent days getting myself back to square one.

Always backup everything ... twice!
