Raw processing with Linux?

Hi, I'm a Ubuntu Linux person these days and so enjoying it.

While I normally shoot with JPG, I realise that I can get a bit more flexibility shooting raw.

I have tried opening PEF files with Gimp, which it does (with a few errors / warnings) but, while I like Gimp, is there a better approach?

Are there Linux users out there processing Raw files and if so what are you using?

I use, and love Rawtherapee...and you should use DNG, you can have troubles converting PEF since it's usually not supported in linux RAW conversion software.

Make sure you try Bibble. There is a trial version available.

Ufraw + gimp has worked quite nicely for me for the actual processing. Occasional problems (a strip of junk at the right edge) with K-5 .DNGs though. Should see whether there has been an update though. With ufraw the thing to discover was that gamma needs tweaking, gamma=0.35 and linearity=0.063 would seem to produce results that are reasonably close to camera JPEGs with the default settings with both the K-x and K-5.

+1 for UFRaw. BTW, the pink "strip of junk" and gamma issues mean you need to upgrade to 0.18, as older versions don't support the K5.

I have bible pro licence, but I switched to darktable, it's just better.

+1 for bibble. I evaluated most everything out there. It's the first piece of software I've purchased in 8 years. That should tell you something.

So many great options - thanks.

So far have tried Ufraw and darktable.

Ufraw seems to work Ok.

Darktable (V0.8) seems to show images all blue looking (its like the colours are negative of what they should be or something). I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit - anyone had that issue?

DNG? If it is try to compile DT from the master, or wait for newer DT build from the unstable PPA.

Darktable is my RAW converter/manipulator of choice. Kind of geeky but once you get the hang of things it is extremely powerful. And the images it produces are superb.

Indeed I'm liking what I am seeing with darktable.

I can see I will be shooting a lot more RAW now!
