All versions of Lightroom, including 4.0 have only provided support for lateral CA.

The new LR 4.1 RC2 (release candidate 2) includes new defringing support to combat axial CA as well.

Not sure whether they are scaling colour channels or just desaturating.

Desaturating. The controls revolve around picking the correct fringe color so it can zap it, but it will also zap any other parts of the image with the matching color. However, the controls allow you to define a very narrow band (and has a picker so you can use the eyedropper to select a fringe area), and the new LR also has localized brushes so you can localize the effect if needed. And it has a preview where it whites out the unaffected areas so you can see just where it is going to zap. So still a bit of work for hard cases, but the tools are geared towards the specific problem so it makes it easier. The new auto version to get rid of lateral CA is fantastic though -- just check it and make it a default on import and you'll never see lateral CA.
