Do you have any type of image manipulation software? Gimp, PSP, etc?

The freeware Faststone image viewer does a great job adding watermarks - textual ones, graphic ones, etc:
FastStone Image Viewer - Powerful and Intuitive Photo Viewer, Editor and Batch Converter

Under the menu Effects > Watermark, or for batch operations, Tools > Batch Convert Selected Images > Advanced options > Watermark

I second this one too. It was recommended to me by a friend overseas and I couldn't be happier with it. You can insert a watermark from a file or simply add text that you can make somewhat opaque, and it's quick and easy to use.

I have Lightroom 3

I know you can place a watermark with LR3, but I've been wanting to learn how to design a simple one for my shots that will one day be worth stealing.

I'm going to give a few of those programs a go.

You can design a simple transparent greyscale PNG or GIF (with Gimp, CS4 or any other image manipulation software you are used to) and apply it as a batch with ImageMagick

There is a Windows port of imagemagick if you are not using Linux : ImageMagick: Install from Binary Distribution
