Both have IPS panels so either should be great for photography. Cannot comment on the problems you mention, and remember there are very few makers of IPS panels and lots of people wrapping them up into monitors....

You might also want to consider the fairly new Viewsonic IPS monitors - in the UK they are at a very competitive price, the same might be true where you live.

Try to find some spare cash for a hardware calibration device. I use an Eizo monitor which was pretty accurate out of the box, but at startup when the calibrated profile is loaded I can see the difference - greys are too warm before it's loaded.

I will also be in the market for an IPS monitor soon. In addition to monitor suggestions in the 24inch range, what are some good calibration tools to go with it? I only have heard of Spyder3 and of Spectraview that comes with some NEC monitors.

I have an LG IPS236v and am pretty pleased with it so far compared to my previous 7yr old Samsung 204b monitor. I think I paid around $210.00 for it.

Too warm for your viewing conditions, perhaps. Probably it was factory calibrated to D50, the pre-press standard, which is rather warmer than daylight.

I set it to the correct colour temperature (6500K / D65) when I calibrated it.

i have HP one

it`s nice, and affordable for it`s size and IPS, but - it will need calibration, it`s too bright, and tends to "over-red" pictures

I use a NEC IPS Screen that is hardware calibratable and calibrate it with NECs SpectraView software and a ColorMunki Puck.

I've got a pair of HP ZR22w monitors. When calibrated, they are pretty amazing for the price. Probably the best monitors I've owned that didn't cost the farm.
