Croping with Photoshop CS5

Perhaps I'm being dense but I just don't get it.

I want to crop to an exact size by pixels.

Lets say I want to make a 100 percent crop of an image who's crop dimensions are 1000x500 pixels.
PS constrains the crop box to this aspect ratio 2:1 but the crop box does not constrain it's self to the size of 1000x500 pixels.

What am I doing wrong? I have many other programs that do this with ease but not PS.

Bring up the crop tool, in the style window, click it and then click fixed size in the drop down and then enter your pixel dimensions.
Easy.

Your options are Pixels per Inch or Pixels per cm. Wheatfield isn't quite complete here unless I too am missing something. 1000x500 IS a 2:1 aspect ratio so if you want a 1000x500 crop, in pixels per inch, you need to do a 10 inch wide crop at 100 pixels per inch (just using simple numbers here). To constrain the size, enter 100 and 50 in the aforementioned boxes. Select Pixels Per Inch, and put 100 into the resolution window. Then do a 10 inch wide crop. Photoshop Has rulers and guides that can be used for this purpose.

Is there a reason why you want a specific number of Pixels in this crop?

Using JeffJS solution, one additional point:

1) Prior to changing anything, untick "Resample Image".
2) Make your change.
3) Retick "Resample Image".

Naw, Wheatfield missed something.
I told him how to make a constrained size box, but should have said use the marquee tool, not the crop tool.
An inprovement to what you described is to just enter 1000 px and 500 px into the value windows. The crop will end up being resampled to that pixel dimension without having to do the math.
