I cannot explain exactly what happended, as your information is incomplete. But anyway it should be related to combined raw/jpeg storage. The raw (and its thumbnail) is always coloured, the jpg is whatever you made it by processing (could be b/w).
One possible explanation is that the author converted the raw to a b/w jpg with a program which does not automatically update the thumbnail on modifications, or has disabled the function to automize this procedure. But many such programs also offer a separate function called "update thumbnail".
