Why is a thumbnail in color but opens up in BW?

I saved a photo I found on the web. The original was in BW, but the thumbnail is in color. When I open it up it turns into a BW image.

No doubt the photo took it in color and processed it in BW. But why is the thumbnail not BW?

Thanks

I cannot explain exactly what happended, as your information is incomplete. But anyway it should be related to combined raw/jpeg storage. The raw (and its thumbnail) is always coloured, the jpg is whatever you made it by processing (could be b/w).

One possible explanation is that the author converted the raw to a b/w jpg with a program which does not automatically update the thumbnail on modifications, or has disabled the function to automize this procedure. But many such programs also offer a separate function called "update thumbnail".
